Literature Evangelism Trip
to New Orleans, LA
During the trip to New Orleans, we talked and Kathy helped me with
some stuff for the Technology Center. As we rode, we saw some weird
things like this dog
sticking his head out of the window. While we were there, we stayed
with Cornbread's Mom and Dad - we felt right at home. Katrina was
in charge of the food,
so we ate well and it tasted great! "Trust in God" by
the Winans was our trip theme song - we played it umpteen times.
Canvassing is requires real energy, and when you're not canvassing,
you're catching Zzz like Omari.
They bury their dead above ground in New Orleans because of the
water table, so here's an interesting gravesite.
Finally, to wrap up our Spring Break trip, we went to the Aquarium.
With two leaky tires that didn't fail us and a can of fix-a-flat
(just in case), we made it back to Oakwood safely.
Literature Evangelism Trip to Chattanooga,
TN
For Thanksgiving Break of 2000, I told Pastor Smith, the director
of Oakwood's Literature Evangelism Training Center, that I would
like to lead a small books* campaign and he told me that Chattanooga,
Tennessee was the place. I practically grew up in Chattanooga, and
the trip brought back many
memories. Thanks Keisha, for letting me scan in the pics.
We attended church at New Life the first weekend, where Mac Ruff
preached a powerful sermon about Samson and Delilah. I was blessed
to witness a lady who was our neighbor while we lived in Chattanooga
give her heart to Christ that day. That experience taught me all
the more vividly that our work is to sow seeds, and the work of
the Holy Spirit is to convict hearts. We then went to eat at
Orchard Park church.
That week, we drove around Chattanooga, dropping off LEs at BiLo,
Food Lion, Pruitts, WalMart, SAMS, and other parking lots. We accidentally
carried another LE's luggage with us to Chattanooga, and we eventually
got that straightened out. For lunch, we prepared lunches once,
and we ate at places like Taco
Bell, and a Subway that announced
"Buy one, get one free on Tuesday", so we took advantage
of it. After getting "booted" off of many, many lots,
we found a hotspot at a particular Food Lion and a Pruitts near
the Wilcox street tunnel.
The last weekend, we attended the Orchard Park Church, and being
Thanksgiving weekend, the Pastor Black preached about how ungrateful
the Israelites were for the manna sent from heaven. How the Lord
sent so much quail, everybody could get a donkey load of it. That
night, we visited Ruby
Falls, but opted to spend our night playing games at the Walwyn's
home. We played Mafia for much of the night and had a really good
time. I'm super glad that we stayed with the Walwyns. They accepted
our entire group, loved us and took good care of us. I pray that
the Lord blesses their home doubly for being willing, and for their
hospitality.

The Annex
The Annex is THE ideal dorm to stay
in at Oakwood College. It's a two-level house, but the stairs
leading downstairs have been locked with deadbolts. In my
building, there were three rooms, 6 beds upstairs, one bath, and
my friend Teo could tell you that our room
sleeps 3 if it has to.
During the semester I stayed in the Annex, rooming with Tosin
Atolagbe, we showed DVD movies on the wall some Saturday nights,
Myra and I (Myra did most of the work) actually fixed a Sabbath
dinner in the kitchen, and I remember eating lots of early-morning
bowls of Oatmeal, or Friday- afternoon doughnuts!
The Banquet
Oakwood's banquet is
one the biggest events of the year. It's a lady's night if anything.
Kena and I rode with Victor Wilson and his date, Devonette. When
I am at the banquet I like to take lots of pictures, and make the
ladies smile. (see the pics)
This year's program was the best I've seen - two thumbs up! The
banquet tickets say 8:00 PM, but I arrived around 9:00 PM because
the banquet traditionally begins an hour later (not that they planned
it that way). But this year, the program had already begun and I
found the table numbers very convenient for locating my seat. While
we ate our dinner, some Oakwood students played some nice jazz numbers
that set the mood for the night. Guest group "Chapter 5"
sang some special music numbers throughout the night and the program
terminated with the concert put on by Karen Clark (I think). Like
I said, I go for the pictures!
